Made to Measure Dressmaking Service

RA wedding gown

Bring your dreams to life and let us make something especially for you with our made-to-measure dressmaking service. Whether it’s for a special occasion, party or everyday wear, we will create your perfect outfit as we focus on what women really want - stylish clothing that is both flattering and comfortable to wear – the ultimate in ladies tailoring!

We specialise in all types of ladies clothing and make all sizes of maternity wear, daywear, evening wear and office attire such as dresses, skirts, shirts, blouses, trousers and ladies suits as well as ball gowns, prom dresses, evening dresses, everything for a wedding and 'one off' outfits for all other special occasions. When you contact us to enquire about a made to measure garment we will usually arrange an appointment with you to discuss the details.  We will talk about why you require the item, what style is right for you, your ideas for the design, the suitability of the fabrics you want and any other relevant points such as when the garment is required and the likely cost.

Many people think that having clothing made is cheaper than buying it from a designer, but that is not always the case. However, by commissioning a bespoke garment from Barbara the Dressmaker you can be assured you will receive a perfectly styled outfit, fitted for your shape and you will be involved directly with the dressmaking process at all stages. When something is made-to-measure, we often have to start from scratch and make a pattern and toile, source materials, do individual fittings, etc., but designers have all of this done by teams, materials are sourced and bought in bulk and patterns are cut once for the whole production. Their garments are not personalised to suit the individual and often the manufacturing is done offshore. We always keep our prices as reasonable as we can but these factors all can add to the cost.

Our policy is to give 110% satisfaction to clients, bringing their ideas to life by producing work of the highest quality.  Apart from our first class workmanship, we believe in ensuring that all our made to measure clothing fits perfectly, because even a garment of the highest quality construction can look terrible if it does not fit well.  For that reason, depending on the garment involved, we may take up to 30 separate body measurements before we start work and we will even take your shoe preference into account if you require trousers or a long dress.

Whether you ask us for a “Classic silk sheath dress with waist seam and flaired hem”, or "something like the dress that Preeya Kalidas wore at the TV Awards”, Barbara F Pellumbi can create it for you! We can develop your garment from a picture or we can sketch a design from your basic description and you will have the opportunity to add your own unique personal touches, choosing colour and type of fabrics, style and design of pockets and cuffs, types and placement of buttons, zips and fastenings and many other embellishments to make your garment truly individual to you.

You are welcome to visit us, to view photos of  work we have completed over the past few years. Some are also in the photo gallery, but unfortunately we do not keep a collection of actual items in our studio for you to see, as every bespoke garment is a ‘one-off’, individually created and beautifully finished especially for each client, with embroidery, pearls and hand-beading as required. The fabrics we use are chosen according to the garment. Sensual and flattering silks, satin, lace, taffeta, organza and chiffons for luxurious dresses; practical and comfortable wool crepe, velvet, cottons, linen and tweed are recommended for suits and jackets, but the choice is ultimately yours.

If you need something - don’t hesitate to contact us and we will let you know if we can fit it in.
